SEO article taken up

An article written about an earlier entry on this SEO blog - for a university study conducted into internet user behaviour - has been picked up and run by one of the article directories. Research is key in SEO and the customer's 'mouse and click behaviour' is of vital importance: once we comprehend the reasons for clicking, we can better influence the user. More clicks equals better ROI and happier SEO / SEM clients.

Search Engine Optimisation Terms A-B

As a search engine optimisation specialist, I am constantly asked to provide 'translations' of some of the keywords of OUR SEO industry. A few to start with...
Anchor Text - Also known as Link Text, the clickable text of a hyperlink.
ALT Text - The text that appears when you put your mouse on top of an image or a picture.
Authority Site - A site that has many In-Bound links coming to it, and very little outbound links.

Blind Traffic - This is traffic that is extremely low quality often by low relevance pages.
BotShort - for robot. Often used to refer to a search engine spider.
Browser - Software application used to browse the internet - Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are the 2 most popular browsers.
Black Hat SEO - A term referring to the practice of “unethical” SEO. These techniques are used to gain an advantage over your competition. Of course, these are what give our industry a bad name and clients should always search for the ethical search engine optimisation specialists.

Number 1 will always be king in SEO!

A university study examined the links internet users followed on the search engine results page (SERPS). They found that 42% of users clicked the top result, and 8% of users clicked the second result. This confirms previous studies that the number one result gets many more clicks than all other results.
In this particular study, the researchers did a second test, wherein they secretly swapped the order of the top two search hits. The original number two entry in the search engine's prioritisation ended up on top, and the top entry was relegated to second place.
Although the search results were different, users still clicked on the top entry 34% of the time and on the second hit 12% of the time.

So, what does this mean to search engine optimisation specialists (SEO) and our clients web sites? This study confirms the importance of being listed on the first result page through organic search engine optimisation. If your clients web site is not listed on the first result page, the chances are that internet users will not see or visit the website.

What are the effects of Windows Live for Search Engine Opimisation Specialists?

Reuters continues to publicise and discuss the Search Engine MSN 's revamped image of Windows Live Search. It will allow users to display all query results on one page without moving from page to page - so what will the impact be for seach engine optimisation specialists and their clients? "People are getting less and less satisfied with search," claims microsoft.
Microsoft trails Web search leader Google and number-two Yahoo. Once the new search engine is officially launched in the summer, Windows Live Search will replace MSN Search on Microsoft's main content Web site, www.MSN.com.
The company's research consistently shows that one out of every two Web queries still fail to produce the answer sought by the user, fueling dissatisfaction. With more results shown on the page, in theory, it will be easier for search engine optimisation specialists to increase their clients ROI. If a greater number of results are shown on the page how will this affect search engine marketing? will pay per click marketing - overture - be reduced in size on the page?

MSN going after Google!

MSN believes that it will overtake Google in the search stakes before long in both the US and European markets, according to Neil Holloway, Microsoft president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He told Reuters Global Technology, Media & Telecoms Summit that "The quality of our search and the relevance of our search from a solution perspective to the consumer will be more relevant." He said that Microsoft's goal -- but not its initial offering -- would go beyond finding URLs and instead focus in on the specific information sought by Internet users. Will customers make the switch? Only time will tell. This is of relevance to Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation Specialists in that this will impact on the pay per click and bias towards these two major search engines.
